Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin met with media members Tuesday to discuss the Aggies’ loss last week to Alabama and this week’s game at Ole Miss.

He also tossed in his preparation technique on the fumbled punt by Michigan last week that allowed his alma mater, Michigan State, to win in the final second.

On his team’s offensive line performance last week:

“There was good and bad, but everybody has had problems running on Alabama. Look, Tra’s (Carson) rush average was not bad, but we didn’t have enough rushes. There were mitigating circumstances for that, like falling behind.”

On Carson’s performance:

“I couldn’t be happier. He runs the ball a lot and he takes a lot of shots.”

On the three interceptions Alabama returned for touchdowns:

“We no doubt have to play better at the (quarterback) position. On one of them we could have run a better route, but we put ourselves in that position (to throw interceptions). Our guys pressed a bit and it was a terrible time for that, but it’s a learning experience.”

On the defensive back’s performance:

“I think we are playing pretty good in the secondary. There is a real chemistry there.”

On the linebacker corps performance:

“(Freshman) Richard Moore came in and did a pretty good job. He played with emotion and he flew to the ball, but he made a few mistakes. He was far from being overwhelmed.”

On Ole Miss’ ability to score:

“Chad Kelly is a big guy, a strong guy with a live arm. His perimeter guys are phenomenal. They put up 70 points up a couple of times early in the year and that helps their average. They have quality wide receivers including one of the best in the country (Laquon Treadwell) and three, four, five other guys, some of them we recruited. They have a running back (Jaylen Walton) who is a live wire back there. Offensively, they’ve got weapons.”

On playing its first game outside Texas this season:

“We’ve been on the road. We were on the road in Houston and we were on the road in Dallas. Because we cross state lines, does that mean we’re on the road? Here’s what’s important: we’ve been there three times in four years. I don’t know how that schedule worked out.”

On if he is having his team practice muffed punt snaps like the one that allowed Michigan State to beat Michigan:

“No. And I doubt any of the other 128 teams are practicing it. Here’s what happens: you cover everything you can cover (in practice), but every year something else comes up.”
