Jordan Gainey and Tennessee had an exciting scrimmage with Michigan State on Sunday.

Tennessee’s season might not start on Nov. 6, but the game felt like an NCAA Tournament classic. Gainey described the 89-88 win as being like a Final Four game at the post-game presser.

“That didn’t feel like an exhibition,” said Gainey. “Felt like a Final Four game.”

Even Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo agreed. He said that the game felt like it was being played in March instead of October.

“That felt like March. I asked Rick if we’re stupid,” said Izzo. “Told him we don’t need this. They punched us in the mouth.”

Gainey finished second on the team in scoring with 20 points. Dalton Knecht had the most points for Tennessee with 28. Gainey went 6-for-10 from the floor and also made 4 three-pointers.

This game won’t matter since it was just a scrimmage, but it’s always good to get a feel about your team before the season tips off.

The Volunteers upset Duke in the NCAA Tournament last season before losing to FAU in the Sweet 16.

Rick Barnes and Tennessee open the year with Tennessee Tech on Nov. 6. Tipoff will be at 6:30 p.m. ET on SECN+/ESPN+.
