Josh Heupel revealed Dont’e Thorton’s status after the wide receiver suffered an injury against Missouri.

The junior will be out for the remainder of the regular season after suffering a lower-leg injury in the second quarter against the Tigers. The play came after Thorton caught a touchdown pass and a Missouri defender came down on ankle. Thorton’s touchdown was the Vols’ only score in the loss.

While he will miss the final 2 games of the season, Heupel hinted that Thorton could return for Tennessee’s bowl game.

“Donte will be out for the remainder of the regular season,” Heupel said in his press conference Monday. “We’ll see where we’re at as we get into postseason play.”

Thorton has recorded 13 receptions for 224 yards and a touchdown this season.

Tennessee has faced some blows to the wide receiver position this season. The Vols lost Bru McCoy after he suffered an injury against South Carolina, and now they will be without Thorton as well.

Heupel was pleased with the production he got from backup wide receivers on Saturday.

“Young guys, there was some real positive things that they did over the course of the game,” Heupel said. “Chas (Nimrod), Kaleb (Webb), all in all, I liked a majority of what they did.”
