He impressed during Tennessee’s training camp, but he won’t be on the field Thursday night.

Vols junior linebacker Byron Young has been ruled ineligible ahead of the season opener against Bowling Green, according to Austin Price of VolQuest, due to 2 games that Young played for a prep school in 2017. Gulf Coast Sports Academy (Mobile, Ala.) folded at that point in that season, which is why Young didn’t lose that year of eligibility.

However, it will still have an impact on Young now, considering he won’t yet be able to make his Tennessee debut. Price reported that the Vols plan to appeal the situation — which also has nothing to do with the NCAA’s ongoing investigation into the program for recruiting violations — to try to get him in the fold as soon as possible.

Young joined the Vols in January after previously playing for Georgia Military College. According to Young’s bio on Tennessee’s site, he was working as an assistant manager at a Dollar General in Georgia before making the team at GMC during a tryout.

It’s a remarkable story that will continue when Young suits up for his Vols debut, whenever that may be.

Tennessee and Bowling Green are kicking off Thursday at 8 p.m. ET on SEC Network.
