You can tell Georgia fans are hungry for a special season in 2015. An announced crowd of 92,227 packed Sanford Stadium for Saturday’s game weather-shortened opener against Louisiana-Monroe, an SEC-high in Week 1.

The game was delayed midway through the third quarter due to lightning and later called with 9:54 left in the fourth in front of a half-empty stadium.

“I think this is the first time I’ve been involved in one that got terminated at this point,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said. “We had one delay, then another, and it could’ve gone all day and all night, so it was in the best interest of everyone to terminate it when we did.”

Florida nearly set an attendance record in Jim McElwain’s debut as 90,227 fans showed up for the Gators’ emphatic 61-13 drubbing of New Mexico State. Several promotions including a ‘$5 bring-a-friend‘ ticket deal was a great idea.

The Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game was officially a sell-out in Atlanta as 73,297 watched Auburn hold off Louisville.

College football’s opening game in Charlotte pitting South Carolina-North Carolina fell 22,791 fans short of capacity at Bank of America Stadium. Face-value ticket prices exceeding $120 and the 6 p.m. EST local kickoff time on a Thursday night kept some folks at home.

The SEC had an opening weekend attendance average of 63,213 with seven games finishing above that number, including two neutral-site contests. That average would’ve been higher had it not been for LSU’s canceled home game against McNeese State where the number of Week 1 fans may have topped 100,000.
