What’s happened to the state of Alabama?

It’s not even October and we’re already referencing the fall of the Crimson Tide and bashing a preseason Heisman candidate whose been benched on the Plains.

Welcome to the wild, wild West.

This week’s SEC Championship Predictor is vastly different than before with a multi-team switch in the Top 5. Alabama has fallen four spots to No. 5 while LSU and Ole Miss made dramatic jumps.

Here’s how we project each team’s chance to win the league title heading into the fourth weekend:

LSU (18 percent chance)

Blessed with a Heisman front-runner in the backfield, the Tigers have been one of college football’s most impressive teams thus far and is the only squad in the country that’s beaten consecutive Top 25 opponents in league play.

OLE MISS (16 percent chance)

Many believe the Rebels have already won the toughest game they’ll play during the regular season, a good omen for a team that’s been unstoppable on offense through the first three weeks. Avoiding a slip-up over the next four weeks prior to hosting Texas A&M is paramount to this team’s overall trek toward an SEC Championship.

GEORGIA (16 percent chance)

Are we still questioning Greyson Lambert’s ability as a passer? Georgia’s offensive line kept pass rushers at bay while Lambert lit up South Carolina’s secondary with his first 300-yard game, an outing that featured an NCAA-record 24 completions in 25 attempts. We haven’t mentioned that Georgia’s defense, thus far, has been lights out.

TEXAS A&M (10 percent chance)

Saturday’s game against Arkansas at AT&T Stadium will provide an accurate measuring stick on just how far this team has come defensively under John Chavis. The Aggies lead the nation in total sacks (15), but they’ve given up some big plays over the last two weeks against average football teams. A dominant performance in their first SEC games increases this stock.

ALABAMA (8 percent chance)

Alabama hasn’t flatlined … yet. Nick Saban and his players were punched in the mouth by Ole Miss for 3.5 quarters last weekend, but managed to show some fight late with a chance to win the game with a clutch drive in the final two minutes. It didn’t happen and the Crimson Tide fell 10 spots in the AP Poll. Last season, Alabama won out following a loss to the Rebels.

AUBURN (8 percent chance)

Auburn’s division title hopes hinge on this weekend’s game against Mississippi State, a must-win if there ever was one for Gus Malzahn. The Tigers are breaking in new quarterback Sean White and an 0-2 start in the West would be fatal.

MIZZOU (8 percent chance)

Three-point wins over UConn aren’t going to earn this program any respect nationally. That comes this weekend when — if — the Tigers prevail in their league opener at Kentucky. Maty Mauk, above all, must improve.

TENNESSEE (5 percent chance)

Butch Jones can cover up the disappointing loss to Oklahoma in Gainesville, but if the Vols lose to the Gators for an 11th consecutive time, the Tennessee fan base is going to want answers.

MISSISSIPPI STATE (4 percent chance)

The Bulldogs are certainly talented enough to overcome their SEC-opening loss to LSU with a couple quality wins against league competition, but their next matchup at Auburn will ultimately decide where this squad’s heading this fall.

FLORIDA (4 percent chance)

This team hasn’t yet developed a blemish under first-year coach Jim McElwain, but the last two outings offensively haven’t been pretty. Opening the SEC slate with consecutive wins this weekend against Tennessee would exceed September expectations.

KENTUCKY (2 percent chance)

The Wildcats’ realistic shot at a division crown went out the window when they lost for the 29th straight time against Florida, but a victory over Mizzou on Saturday increases their chances.

ARKANSAS (1 percent chance)

If the Razorbacks can’t beat Toledo or Texas Tech in their own backyard, how are they going to handle nationally-ranked road games at Alabama, Ole Miss and LSU?

SOUTH CAROLINA (0 percent chance)

With a true freshman quarterback now leading the way and upcoming games against LSU and Texas A&M, the Gamecocks’ chances at a division title are over.

VANDERBILT (0 percent chance)

The Commodores are staring at an 0-2 start in the SEC after Saturday’s game against third-ranked Ole Miss.
