Houston, Atlanta, Miami and Santa Clara, Calif. are among the cities that are bidding for the chance to host the College Football Playoff National Championship in the not-too-distant future.

Bids are currently being solicited to host the 2018, 2019 and 2020 national championship games.

Since the first BCS National Championship Game in 1998, college football’s title game has rotated between four sites: the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., the Superdome in New Orleans, Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla. and University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., the sites of the four major bowls. But now additional sites are being considered, with many of them having newer, better quality stadiums.

Houston and Santa Clara, Calif. have bid to host the national championship game in each of the three years. Houston would hold the game in NRG Stadium, the home of the Houston Texans, while Santa Clara would host the game at Levi’s Stadium, the new home of the San Francisco 49ers. NRG Stadium hosted the Super Bowl in 2004 and will host it again in 2017. Levi’s Stadium will host the Super Bowl in 2016.

Atlanta, which is scheduled to open a new football stadium in 2017, and South Florida (Sun Life Stadium) have also submitted bids to host the title game in 2018. San Antonio, Charlotte and New Orleans have also bid to host the game in 2019 and 2020. Detroit made a bid for 2019 and Minneapolis, Minn. made a 2020 bid.

Neither Pasadena nor Glendale have submitted a bid yet.
