UCF has reportedly hired a new football coach. Florida fans can breathe a sigh of relief, because the new coach doesn’t come from Jim McElwain’s staff.

On Sunday, 247Sports reported that UCF is expected to hire Bowling Green head coach Dino Babers. Babers has gone 17-9 in two seasons with the Falcons and has a 36-16 overall record as a head coach. Babers was an assistant coach at Texas A&M from 2001-02.

The Knights have been looking for a new coach since George O’Leary retired on Oct. 25. UCF won the Fiesta Bowl and finished sixth in the nation two years ago, but went 0-12 this year.

Florida defensive coordinator Geoff Collins and linebackers coach Randy Shannon had both been mentioned as possible candidates for the job. But they will stay in Gainesville for now.

Former Auburn head coach Gene Chizik was also mentioned as a possible candidate. Chizik is currently the defensive coordinator at North Carolina. Another potential candidate was Alabama offensive line coach Mario Cristobal, whose name has also been mentioned in connection with the Miami job.
