Dual-threat quarterback Keytaon Thompson became the fifth commitment in the 2017 recruiting class for the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Wednesday.

The 6-foot-4, 210-pound prospect is the eighth-ranked dual-threat quarterback in the class of 2017, according to 247Sports composite rankings.

Thompson chose the Bulldogs over in-state LSU in what might be considered a bit of a surprise. He also had offers from Florida, Tennessee, Miami, Texas Tech and several others.

The junior from New Orleans told reporters the offensive scheme and the work that head coach Dan Mullen and assistant Brian Johnson have done with quarterbacks gave Mississippi State the edge.

Thompson becomes the seventh quarterback in the 2017 classes committed to an SEC program.
