The attendance at the pre-Christmas games, particularly the ones in far-away places, is downright shameful. These are essentially made-for-TV contests.

There have been plenty of stinkers. Boise State trashed Northern Illinois, 55-7. San Diego State overwhelmed Cincinnati, 42-7. And did anyone bother watching Georgia State against 5-7 San Jose State in the AutoNation Cure Bowl?

According to ESPN analyst Trevor Matich, bowl-game scrooges are misguided. The events, especially the less-heralded games, are more about charities, local businesses and corporate sponsors.
