Ah, the 40-yard dash.

It’s a staple of the NFL Combine, but the debate rages on about just how useful it is in determining the value of a football player.

As the NFL Combine rolls on in Indianapolis this weekend, we have been tracking the performance of former SEC players.

The quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers have finished the 40-yard dash portion of their workouts.

Here are some of the notable unofficial times (in seconds) within the SEC:

QUARTERBACKS

Dak Prescott, Mississippi State, 4.80
Brandon Allen, Arkansas, 4.84

RUNNING BACKS

Keith Marshall, Georgia, 4.31
Kenyan Drake, Alabama, 4.45
Brandon Wilds, South Carolina, 4.54
Derrick Henry, Alabama, 4.54
Alex Collins, Arkansas, 4.59
Kelvin Taylor, Florida, 4.60
Peyton Barber, Auburn, 4.64

Arkansas’ Jonathan Williams and Texas A&M’s Tra Carson did not run.

WIDE RECEIVERS

Ricardo Louis, Auburn, 4.44
Malcolm Mitchell, Georgia, 4.46
Cody Core, Ole Miss, 4.47
Marquez North, Tennessee, 4.49
Demarcus Robinson, Florida, 4.59
D’haquille Williams, Auburn, 4.73
De’Runnya Wilson, Mississippi State, 4.85

South Carolina’s Pharoh Cooper and Ole Miss’ Laquon Treadwell did not run.

*Note: Combine times are electronically-verified, but often take several hours to become official. To emphasize, these are the unofficial times and many of them will change by several hundredths of a second once they become official.

THE GOOD

  • Georgia RB Keith Marshall has been impressing scouts with his measurables. He was the fastest running back at the Combine, and he was also the strongest with 25 reps during the bench press portion.
  • Auburn WR Ricardo Louis turned in a very strong time, outrunning former teammate D’haquille Williams by 0.29 seconds.
  • Former Florida QB Jeff Driskel was the fastest QB at the combine, running the 40-yard dash in 4.56. That was faster than many of the RB and WR in this year’s draft class.

THE RESPECTABLE

  • Tennessee WR Marquez North raised some eyebrows when he decided to leave college early, but a 4.49 time to go along with his frame could certainly help his draft stock.

THE BAD

  • Mississippi State WR De’Runnya Wilson has a large frame and is certainly a playmaker, but his 4.85 time in the 40-yard dash is certain to hurt his draft stock. He’ll need to rebound with a better time at the Bulldogs’ pro day.
  • Character concerns are already an issue for former Auburn WR D’haquille Williams, and a 4.73 40-yard dash time is not going to do him any favors in his attempt to overcome getting booted from the Tigers team last fall.
