Florida’s presumptive QB1, Luke Del Rio, had an excellent performance in last month’s Orange and Blue Debut. He effecitvely managed the first-team offense, hitting 10-of-11 passes for 176 yards and two touchdowns.

Del Rio’s best play of the night? The incompletion.

“Luke had a pretty good spring game,” McElwain said on The Paul Finebaum Show Friday. “In fact, best play he made was the one he threw out of bounds on a missed protection. That’s what it’s all about.”

The coach wasn’t alone in this thinking. SEC Network analyst Greg McElroy, who played for McElwain at Alabama, similarly called Del Rio’s throwaway the play of the night from the booth.

The comments from the coach and his former pupil indicate that the quarterback’s decision making will be the key to the UF offense. Florida is not likely to be the SEC’s most exciting team, but a smart quarterback to go along with an excellent punter, a highly capable kicker and a talented defense means that Gators can be competitive in any game by winning the field position and turnover battles.

Del Rio is the only one of Florida’s four quarterbacks on the current roster who was on campus last season. He sat out as a transfer from Oregon State. The quarterback’s familiarity with the playbook, and offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier, who recruited him to Alabama in 2013, is giving some Gators fans cautious optimism for the ’16 season.
