With three division teams off on Saturday, and only one of the other four playing another conference foe, the SEC East flew under the radar in Week 8.

This was the Saturday, however, that a team from the SEC East finally got a win over an SEC West team. Unfortunately, since it did not come from or against any of the conference’s ranked teams, it feels like a tidbit of trivia relative to the rest of the season.

Here’s what we learned about every East team in Week 8.

Florida (5-1, 3-1)

Week 8 result: Did not play

What we learned: Florida’s recent win over Missouri doesn’t look very impressive considering the Tigers lost to homecoming opponent Middle Tennessee. UF’s road game at LSU looks like the most challenging game left after the Bayou Bengals defeated Ole Miss 38-21. The LSU game certainly looks more difficult than the game at Arkansas, a team that just gave up 543 rushing yards to Auburn.

Georgia (4-3, 2-3)

Week 8 result: DNP

What we learned: Georgia learned that it is facing Auburn at the least desirable time, Week 11. The Tigers are hitting their stride, thumping Arkansas 56-3 and recording an eye-popping 543 rushing yards. Gus Malzahn’s team will no doubt try to run all over the Bulldogs in Athens.

Ole Miss will finally fall out of the the polls with a fourth loss. The highlight of the Rebels’ season is undoubtedly the win over Georgia.

The Commodores at least won their Week 8 nonconference game. So the homecoming loss didn’t look any worse Saturday.

Kentucky (4-3, 3-2)

Week 8 result: Defeated Mississippi State 40-38 on a field goal as time expired

What we learned: The SEC East finally got a win over an SEC West team. The overall record between the two divisions is 1-7.

UK picked up a much-needed win, and as a result could be going to a bowl game for the first time since 2010. That should be enough to get the critics off Mark Stoops’ back if the Wildcats can win one more conference game (against Missouri or Georgia) before the Austin Peay game on Nov. 19.

Missouri (2-5, 0-3)

Week 8 result: Lost to Middle Tennessee 51-45

What we learned: It’s hard to see a path to a bowl game for Mizzou going forward. Even a clean sweep of Kentucky, South Carolina and Vanderbilt only gets the Tigers to five wins. A win over Tennessee or Arkansas looks unlikely, but there’s a reason they play the games.

As far as Saturday’s game, Mizzou was playing catch-up to Middle Tennessee. It’s hard to stomach that 629 yards of offense wasn’t enough.

South Carolina (3-4, 1-4)

Week 8 result: Defeated UMass 34-28

What we learned: South Carolina appears to have found its quarterback in freshman Jake Bentley, who finished his junior year of high school and reclassified to graduate early and enroll in Columbia. Bentley went 17-of-26 passing for 201 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. For the first time all year, the Gamecocks cracked the 30-point mark.

What Bentley can’t fix is the defense. UMass had a pair of fourth-quarter scores, which prevented South Carolina from closing the deal until the last possession.

Tennessee (5-2, 2-2)

Week 8 result: DNP

What we learned: While the second-half conference opponents in UT’s schedule went 3-1 in Week 8, it’s hard to imagine any of the four teams giving the Vols much of a challenge. On the other hand, there’s plenty of reason to hope that Georgia or LSU trips up the Gators, who sit atop the division at 3-1.

No. 1 Alabama’s 33-14 win over No. 6 Texas A&M shows that it’s not just an SEC West-SEC East divide, but that there is still an Alabama-everyone else divide. It’s nothing for the Volunteers to brag about, but it somewhat softens the blow of 49-10.

Vanderbilt (4-4, 1-3)

Week 8 result: Defeated Tennessee State 35-17

What we learned: Derek Mason’s squad avoided a classic letdown scenario after a big win over Georgia. More important, win No. 4 means the Commodores could be going to a bowl game this season. Vanderbilt needs two more wins to become eligible for postseason.

It won’t be easy: The remaining games are against Auburn, Missouri, Ole Miss and Tennessee.

As VU has done all season, the ground game carried the team to victory against TSU.
