While this was billed as the “Year of the Running Back,” the SEC’s rushing leaders heading into Week 9 aren’t who we originally anticipated.

Vanderbilt’s Ralph Webb, believed by many to be a good player but not a great one, is currently atop the conference standings with 855 yards rushing in eight games. He’s done it despite an anemic passing offense for the Commodores.

Not only were LSU’s Leonard Fournette, Georgia’s Nick Chubb and Tennessee’s Jalen Hurd expected to be the best ball carriers in the league, but all of them were involved in preseason Heisman Trophy discussion to some degree — Fournette as the favorite, perhaps. None of them are currently in the top 5 in rushing yards.
