As Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones prepares for Sunday’s Super Bowl showdown against the New England Patriots, he took some time to reflect on his National Signing Day experience.

The Alabama native told NFL.com that he was still undecided on the morning of NSD, but was able to narrow it down to the Crimson Tide and Auburn.

From there, he said he just simply didn’t care for the Tigers as much as Alabama, so he made his decision based on that:

“I woke that morning. I was like ‘OK.’ I had my five envelopes, just moving them around. I was like ‘I don’t know where I’m going to go,'” Jones said. “But then I just thought why not stay in Alabama. People that were supporting me over the years. If I go somewhere too far, they aren’t going to be able to see me play. You know? So that was one of the big reasons I stayed at Alabama. I was going to go to Auburn but I just didn’t like Auburn. They left a bad taste in my mouth.”

Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide were major beneficiaries of Jones’s last-second decision, as he went on to become one of the greatest receivers in school history.

Jones recorded 179 catches for 2,653 and 15 touchdowns in his college career while helping the Crimson Tide win the 2009 BCS national championship.

On Sunday, he’ll try to lead his NFL team to the top of the sport by pulling off an upset of the Patriots.
