When the spring football schedule was released by ESPN, the only SEC school not scheduled to appear on television was Vanderbilt.

Every other conference program will have their spring game accessible for those unable to attend in person. Head coach Derek Mason scrapped the “Black and Gold Spring Game” in favor of a smaller scrimmage.

Many were interested in why Vanderbilt wouldn’t want the exposure. Surely, those considering the Commodores wouldn’t all be able to attend the event in Nashville.

However according to The Tennessean, this isn’t a scenario Mason wants:

“I haven’t talked to the SEC. Hopefully here in the next couple of days I’ll get a chance to talk to the SEC. I never knew that they weren’t coming.”

Mason reiterated that he wants the free exposure — surely as a means to help with recruiting. The head coach also admitted the reason Vanderbilt canceled its typical spring game was due to the fact that he doesn’t have the numbers on the roster he’d like. Additionally, there are several players currently nursing injuries.
