Sportsmanship is still important in high school football, and a lack of handshaking cost one high school football player the chance to participate in a captains’ meeting Friday night.

The emotions ran high for a pair of South Florida football teams returning to action after a two-week layoff because of Hurricane Irma. Dwyer and Palm Beach Gardens, cross-town rivals, showed off the deep-seated feelings of the rivalry when Dwyer players refused to shake hands.

In the video below, the referee said, “I’ll write you up if you don’t shake hands. You’ve got a choice.”

Wells Dunsenbury, a sports reporter for the Sun Sentinel, tweeted a video of the captain’s meeting, and later said that the player who eventually shook hands with the referee is Louisville commit Jarrett Jackson, a defensive end/tight end for Palm Beach Gardens.

To preview the game, the Palm Beach Post reported that, “Dwyer has beaten its cross-town rival eight years in a row, but Gardens features a star-studded lineup that includes Super 11 picks Gurvan Hall and Jarrett Jackson.”

Hall has committed to Miami.
