When Auburn blew a 20-0 lead at LSU a couple of weeks ago, many thought it spelled the end of serious College Football Playoff contention for the Tigers.

However, coach Gus Malzahn’s squad is ranked No. 14 in the first CFP rankings that came out on Tuesday night, and still have a slight chance to crack the final four.

According to ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit, the Tigers have a chance to work their way back into the mix, especially if they beat Georgia and Alabama over the next few weeks and then win the SEC title (via 247Sports):

“How about Auburn?” he said. “With what they have in front of them, the big game with Georgia. Everyone is almost assuming. We’re already talking about Georgia and Alabama undefeated in Atlanta and what happens if Georgia loses a close game? Auburn is sitting there saying, ‘Aren’t they coming to Jordan-Hare? We still get to play them, right?’ Auburn, if they somehow were able to knock off Georgia and Alabama, sitting there with two losses, I think Auburn is still a team that’s thinking about surprising some people and they’re definitely within striking distance if they’re able to get a couple big wins late in the year.”

Obviously, it won’t be easy for the Tigers to do that, but Malzahn’s team still has a chance to knock off the current No. 1 and No. 2 teams — something no other team can claim.

First, though, Auburn has to take care of business at Texas A&M on Saturday afternoon. If the Tigers lose that game, all thoughts of a surprise CFP berth disappear.
