Texas A&M suffered a tough defeat last week vs. MSU at home and now welcomes Auburn to College Station this weekend. Much of the good faith Kevin Sumlin built up following his team’s 5-2 start to the season could disappear if the Aggies go 0-2 in league play in consecutive weeks at home.

Sumlin previewed the big game against the Tigers and shared his thoughts on Mississippi State Wednesday during the SEC Coaches Teleconference.

Here’s a summary of what the Texas A&M coach had to say:

  • Opening statement: “Huge test this week against Auburn… This team will test us.”
  • On the Aggies’ success returning punts. Can you explain? “I think it’s a combination of schematics and what people are doing to cover punts and directional kicks. Punting is more specialized. There are rugby kicks… It’s not just who can kick it the furthest anymore.”
  • Thoughts on Nick Fitzgerald? “He is a tremendous athlete. He’s gotten better as a passer. He’s creating issues with his arm. He rarely gets caught from behind. He was speed to go along with his size. He’s making decisions he did not make last year. He’s playing at a really high level.”
  • Thoughts on Mississippi State? “Dan Mullen does a great job. They are well coached. Defensively, they are big and athletic. They now have a QB that is playing very, very well.”
