What is it going to take for Mississippi State to pull off an upset this weekend in Starkville against Alabama? There aren’t many people better to ask than former Florida and South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier.

Back in 2010, Spurrier’s Gamecocks handed Alabama its worse SEC loss under Nick Saban in a 35-21 win in Columbia. MSU heads into Saturday’s game as a 14-point underdog, which just so happens to be the lowest point spread favoring the Crimson Tide this season since the opener in Atlanta against Florida State.

During one of his regular appearances on ESPNU Radio, Spurrier gave his thoughts on what it would take for MSU to get its first win over Alabama under Dan Mullen this weekend.

“When you are a huge underdog, you should take some chances,” Spurrier said. “We only punted once, it may have been twice — one at the end there.”

The former coach, speaking to former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy, said keeping Alabama’s defense on the field is also paramount to defeating the Tide.

“We were on the field a lot, so your offense was other there watching. That’s how you have upsets,” Spurrier continued. “If Mississippi State is going to beat Alabama, they have to stay on the field. They can’t go three-and-out, three-and-out, three-and-out. You have to stay out there, get some first downs and give your defense some rest.”
