Last year, the Louisville Cardinals and Mississippi State Bulldogs engaged in an unusual trade of sorts, swapping defensive coordinators.

Todd Grantham went from Louisville to Mississippi State, while Peter Sirmon made the opposite move to take over the Cardinals’ defense.

Grantham, now with Dan Mullen at Florida, explained how the move went down during an interview with Courier-Journal.com:

“I knew that there was going to be a change (at Mississippi State),” since he and then-Bulldogs coach Dan Mullen were represented by the same agent.

“I had Dan call Bobby and told him that (Mullen) wanted to talk to me,” Grantham said. “And I met Dan at the (coaches’) convention and told him that I was going to talk it over. And basically from there I went ahead and took the job.”

With the Cardinals and Bulldogs set to play in the TaxSlayer Bowl, it’ll be interesting to see how each coordinator’s knowledge of the other team’s defense factors into the game.

The TaxSlayer Bowl kicks off at noon Eastern time on Saturday, Dec. 30, and can be seen on ESPN.
