No league has more elite players than the Southeastern Conference. If you need proof of that fact, just look at the last decade of NFL draft selections and recruiting rankings to see it’s not even debatable. Having said that, picking the SEC’s most valuable player heading into the 2018 season is an admittedly tough task but one the SEC’s sports information directors were tasked with in a recent poll.

The answer they came up with when the votes were tallied? Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm, with Missouri quarterback Drew Lock finishing in second. That’s according to AL.com, who recently polled the 14 SEC SIDs and asked for their selections.

In his lone season in Athens, Fromm completed an impressive 62.2 percent of his passes for 2,615 yards, 24 touchdowns and only seven interceptions. More impressively, the true freshman led Georgia to the SEC Championship title, a Rose Bowl win and was a half away from capturing the National Championship Game before Tua Tagovailoa was inserted into the game by Alabama.

Fromm’s selection as SEC MVP is an interesting one on a few levels. Many would argue Georgia’s historic run last season was primarily due to the team’s running game and defense, although Fromm does deserve his fair share of credit for the team’s success last season. In addition to that, some even suggest the rising sophomore could lose his role as the starting quarterback in Athens following the signing of five-star prospect Justin Fields. Based on the voting here, the SIDs likely disagree with that notion, but the fact that Georgia signed arguably the nation’s top prospect to push Fromm is interesting.

With Georgia losing so many defensive starters and both Nick Chubb and Sony Michel this offseason, Fromm will have every opportunity to prove his value to the Bulldogs in the upcoming season. Will he rise to the occasion, like he did so many times last season, and earn this lofty recognition or should the SIDs have voted for another player?
