Judging by his recent comments on his former quarterback, Urban Meyer thinks very highly of Joe Burrow. During his appearance at Big Ten Media Days on Tuesday, the Ohio State coach was asked about how difficult it was to see Burrow leave Columbus this offseason via the graduate transfer rule.

If you were unaware, Burrow and Dwayne Haskins battled it out this spring for the right to start in Columbus. Following the spring, Burrow announced he was leaving the program, and Haskins was named the program’s starter heading into 2018 soon after. Of course, Burrow is now playing in Baton Rouge and looks to be the odds-on favorite to starter for the Tigers this fall. So much so, that an online sportsbook won’t even accept bets any longer on the competition after posting them earlier in the week.

Here’s what Meyer had to say at Big Ten Media Days when asked about the conversations he had with Burrow and his family in the spring.

“Very tough conversation in a positive way. Joe Burrow, the last two weeks of spring practice, did about everything he could to win that spot. I really haven’t talked much about this, but it was right there,” Meyer said. “Joe and his family and I had open conversation all the way throughout, including conversation after the season about how we’re going to handle the spring. Ryan Day did a phenomenal job. Even Joe and his family were very gracious and thankful.”

Meyer took things a step farther, indicating he would have loved to see Burrow stay in Columbus this fall. But in today’s age of college football, quarterbacks simply don’t stick around when there are options to play elsewhere.

“Do I wish he was still with us? I do. I love Joe Burrow. I love his family and have great respect for him,” Meyer said. “And that’s not going to stop. That relationship will continue for many years.”

Those comments bold well for LSU’s future with Burrow, as the Tigers potentially have the quarterback in Baton Rouge for two seasons as a graduate student. If Burrow wins over Coach O and his teammates as well as he did Meyer, there’s a good chance LSU proves to be one of the surprise candidates in the SEC this season.
