The biggest question mark for Auburn heading into training camp is close to resolving itself, according to Gus Malzahn.

During his Wednesday media availability, the Auburn coach noted that his team did not suffer any injuries during the latest scrimmage and provide some insight into what the Tigers did at practice on Wednesday. By design, Auburn ran the ball to an extent that would make Mike Leach sick to his stomach. The reason was simple, Malzahn needs to know which of his players are ready to play come Sept. 1 in Atlanta.

“It was a run-oriented scrimmage today, it was 75-80 percent run,” Malzahn shared about the Wednesday practice. “That was by design, to see who could hold on to the football, who could tackle, who could block, who could get off blocks and all that.

“(Joey) Gatewood and Cord Sandberg both went live today. I thought it was good, especially to see Cord out there. I thought he looked good.”

After providing that update on the team’s quarterbacks, Malzahn got to the good stuff — the latest with the offensive line. According to the Auburn coach, that position group is close to working itself out.

“Offensively, I think we are a little bit closer to figuring out our plan up front. We aren’t ready to make a call right now. We don’t know exactly who is starting, but we have some really good information,” Malzahn relayed. “For our running backs, today was a big day. We will elevate the running backs on film.”

Malzahn wouldn’t note if a “big day” was meant to be a positive or a negative but when pressed further about the Tiger running backs, his comment suggested it was a bit of both.

“There were a couple of guys that put the ball on the ground. I can’t remember specifically who it was, but I think we had two guys put the ball on the ground,” Malzahn noted. “Everybody got a chance to carry it today, and that was important.”

When asked to give a timeline for a starting offensive line, Malzahn explained what the team is looking for heading into the tough opener against Washington and why simply naming a starting five isn’t all the team is trying to accomplish during camp.

“We are close… It’s one of those things where you say, how many guys do you have that can help this first game, depth wise? You have to start with that, and I think we are getting real close to saying who can play the very first game if you say this guy goes down, who is the next guy? I think we are really close to that,” he continued. “As far as the starters, there will be some discussion, Chip (Long) and JB (Grimes) will communicate, and this scrimmage was very important. I think it will give us some good information, too.”
