A homeless Washington D.C. high school senior with a scholarship offer was pulled from his team’s game without explanation last Saturday, according to a report from WJLA.com.

Jamal Speaks, who attends Ballou-STAY Opportunity Academy, was not permitted to play for Ballou High School at the request of principal Willie Jackson. The game was delayed 45 minutes as Speaks’ teammates lobbied for him to play, but Jackson didn’t let up and reportedly threatened to fire Ballou’s coach.

“I’m being told I can’t play by the principal,” Speaks told WJLA.com. “I don’t know why he telling me I can’t play.”

According to the report, Speaks was removed from the team following his sophomore year due to residency concerns and is now homeless.

Speaks told the website that Temple has offered him a scholarship on the condition he maintains good grades, and that coaches from the school were planning to attend Ballou’s game last Saturday.

Hopefully all parties came sort this situation out and get Speaks back on the field sooner rather than later.
