Kentucky continued its surprise undefeated run to start the season on Saturday night with a 24-10 win over South Carolina to improve to 5-0 on the season.

The Wildcats’ mistakes were minimal but one significant play made some viewers cringe. Linebacker Kash Daniel was ejected for targeting in the third quarter for a hit on South Carolina’s Jacob August.

August barely had any time to see Daniel coming with his head turned completely the other way. Daniel launched with his helmet, but Kentucky coach Mark Stoops didn’t see too much of an issue with the play itself after the game.

“He’s bummed out with himself and that’s what I told the team,” Stoops said. “Early in the week, we talk about what the situation is going to be, whether it’s going to be a big game at home and all that. There are times where we could handle that situation better than we did tonight. We didn’t handle it quite as good as we did a week ago in my opinion. Guys got to reign it back in a little bit. There was nothing malicious about that. He didn’t mean to target somebody who was very very close from what I could tell.”

Stoops appeared to push more of his anger toward the way Daniel handled the play after it was over when he waved to the crowd as he walked off following the ejection.

“Disappointing, but again a teaching moment for us about peel-back blocks and all that stuff.”

Daniel will miss the first half of next week’s game against Texas A&M. He had 32 total tackles entering Saturday.
