Florida honored Tim Tebow before the game.

Then the Gators delivered a signature victory just like he used to, upsetting No. 5 LSU 27-19 Saturday before a raucous crowd at The Swamp.

Nobody will mistake Feleipe Franks for Tebow, but Franks used his arms and legs to set up Florida’s go-ahead touchdown early through the fourth quarter.

The Gators drove 75 yards for that score. Franks started it with a 26-yard completion to Van Jefferson. He added a 12-yard run to convert a third down, and caught a 15-yard pass that set up 1st-and-goal from the 2. Lamical Perine scored on the next play for a 20-19 lead.

After forcing a punt, the Gators all but sealed the game by picking up critical first downs deep in their own territory, leaning on Jordan Scarlett and taking just time off the clock. Then their punt pinned LSU deep in its territory, and Brad Stewart stepped in front of a Joe Burrow pass and returned the interception 25 yards for a touchdown to account for the final margin.

Analyst Gary Danielson was saying Stewart should have stepped out at the 3, allowing Florida to run out the clock. It was hard to hear the comment above the crowd noise.

Ultimately, it didn’t matter. There were some tense final seconds and a couple of costly LSU drops, but the Gators got out alive, intercepting Burrow’s final pass.

It was Florida’s second consecutive victory over a ranked team, and the Gators’ first victory over a top 5 team since toppling No. 3 Ole Miss in 2015.

The way the No. 5 Tigers dominated their first drive of the game it looked like it was going another painful Saturday at The Swamp.

Burrow went 3-for-4 on the drive including a 38-yard strike to Justin Jefferson to put the Florida defense on its heels. Running backs Nick Brossette and Clyde Edwards-Helaire picked the rest of the yards on the 10-play, 75-yard drive with Brossette finishing it on a 4-yard touchdown run to give LSU a 7-0 lead.

LSU was on the move again with their second drive. Edwards-Helaire powered through the Florida defense for a 16-yard run that got the Tigers inside of the Gators 30.

But the Florida defense came up big when they needed to and Jachai Polite executed a perfect strip sack on Burrow that Kyree Campbell recovered.

Both teams punted on their next two possessions but Florida successfully flipped the field position and finally cashed in midway through the second quarter.

Gators running back Lamical Perine had 7 carries on the drive including a 13-yard run that gave Florida a 1st-and-goal at the LSU 2. Perine finished his hard work with a 1-yard run to tie the score at 7.

LSU regained the lead late in the first half after a 10-play, 63-yard drive netted the Tigers a field goal and a 10-7 lead.

Florida got aggressive to end the half and it paid off. Perine rushed for 23 yards to put the Gators in LSU territory and Franks connected with Josh Hammond on a 35-yard bomb to give Florida a first-and-goal at the LSU 3. On the next play Franks hit Moral Stephens for a 3-yard score to talk a 14-10 lead into half time.

LSU, however, took control of the second half. The Tigers got a second field goal from Tracy, this one for 42 yards to make the score 14-13 at the end of the third quarter.

On the Tigers’ first drive of the fourth quarter Brossette broke off runs of 31 yards and 47 yards to give the Tigers a first-and-goal at the 2. Brossette finished off the 80-yard drive with a short touchdown run to take a 19-14 lead with 11:14 remaining in the game.

Then the Gators answered. Again. And again.
