There weren’t a ton of surprises in SEC Week 11. Tennessee had a week to remember, and both Florida and Missouri rallied late. Meanwhile, Alabama, Georgia and LSU did what they do. And we will do what we do — grade all the teams of the SEC, honor the best and dishonor the worst work of Week 11.

SEC West

Alabama: A-

Yes, they took care of business. They also let Tua Tagovailoa continue to take some punishment and ended up with 305 yards of total offense. Rushing for 3.2 yards per carry is a little concerning as well.

LSU: B+

Yes, it was a win. Yes, it was 24-3 with 13 minutes to play. But the Tigers played down to Arkansas down the stretch and emerged with a not-quite-as-imposing 24-17 win.

Texas A&M: B+

Props to Trayveon Williams and the offensive line for a big deal, as the Aggies rushed for 266 yards. At the same time, the pass defense got shredded pretty badly. The Aggies struck late, so all was well that ended well.

Arkansas: C+

The defense was stout, holding LSU to a reasonable 24 points and 359 total yards. But the offense didn’t do much to help, particularly with 19 rushes for 16 yards.

Mississippi State: C

An A- for the defense and a D- for the offense. They did a good job stringing Alabama out and holding the Tide to 24 points. At the same time, 6 first downs in the game was never going to cut it.

Auburn: C

For about a quarter and a half, everything was going well. And then Georgia rushed for 303 yards and ended the party. At this point, there’s really nothing for this Auburn team to hang its hat on.

Ole Miss: C-

They passed for 373 yards … but were also 1-for-11 on third downs. Meanwhile, they gave up 502 yards and had no ability whatsoever to stop the run down the game’s closing stretch.

East

Georgia: A

For the second week in a row, Georgia started to look increasingly like last year’s Georgia team. This marked consecutive 17-point wins over ranked teams, and neither was really as close as the score. If UGA can run the ball downhill the way they did in this game, the rest of their season could get really interesting.

Tennessee: A

Yes, that was real life. Tennessee gained 412 yards, not only hitting some big plays in the passing game but outrushing Kentucky 215-77. Defensively, they kept UK out of rhythm all day and took control of this game by halftime.

Florida: A-

Well, we could grade the part of the game where they fell down by 17 points late in the third quarter … which wouldn’t be so good. Or we could grade the seamless execution down the stretch that turned that game into a victory. This was impressive.

Missouri: A-

Like the Gators, this was a winning ugly game. It’s hard to give a great grade to a team that allows the opposing back to rush for 182 yards — and the opposing QB to throw for 249 yards and 3 scores. But at the same time, Missouri rushed for 253 yards and got just enough from Drew Lock to get the win … which is, after all, the ultimate point.

South Carolina: C-

Jake Bentley is having a good game, you hit an 89-yard pass and a couple of plays later, you’re up 31-14 to a punchless Florida team with less than 20 minutes to play. And then you lose. This was the fifth game in a row in which Carolina ended up in a one-score game.

Vanderbilt: C-

Your offense runs 65 plays and gains 465 yards. You hold a 28-19 lead midway through the third quarter. But you find a way to lose. A whole lot of good things (like running back Ke’Shawn Vaughn’s day) get overshadowed by the bad things.

Kentucky: F

The No. 11 team in the nation went to a 4-5 team and played a game that would have left a color-blind observer assuming that the ranked squad had taken care of business. No, the butt-whipping was just on the other side. Kentucky’s offense is embarrassing, and the defense is wearing out late in the season. Losing to Tennessee wasn’t shocking (4.5-point spread), but losing THIS WAY to Tennessee was shocking.

Honor Roll

Offense

Florida

It hasn’t always been pretty, but a team that mounts a three-score comeback and rushes for 367 yards deserves some credit.

Texas A&M

Similarly, game ball to Trayveon and the Big Uglies. When you outgain your opponent 266-67 on the ground, you’ll probably have a good day.

Defense

Alabama

A shutout in which State managed 6 first downs? That will qualify for some notice.

Tennessee

Sure, Kentucky is bad offensively. But UT sacked Terry Wilson 5 times, held Benny Snell to 81 rushing yards and generally controlled the game.

Special Teams

Texas A&M

Nothing super flashy, but some nice kick returns and a solid day of kicking and punting all contributed to the win.

Alabama

Hey, they made their kicks. That’s worth noting.

Detention

Offense

Auburn

Once again, the Tigers snooze through an ugly loss. They passed for 4.6 yards per attempt, which means they actually averaged more yardage on the ground — but rushed only 20 times. Ugly.

Kentucky

Their once-powerful ground game was held to 77 yards on 35 carries, and their quarterback looked lost.

Defense

South Carolina

It’s one thing to blow a lead. It’s another to watch the opposing team run the ball through your defense again and again and again. This was Florida, not Alabama.

Ole Miss

They couldn’t stop the run, they couldn’t stop the pass, and after the offense had played them into position to have a shot, the defense gave it away.

Special Teams

Mississippi State

A missed field goal and a “meh” day of punting didn’t help them any.

Kentucky

Two missed field goals (one a block) did nothing to help the morbid Kentucky offense put up some points.
