Not only is Ole Miss on the market for a defensive coordinator, Matt Luke’s program could be on the market for an offensive coordinator at some point this offseason.

That’s the speculation that’s out there and something Luke was asked during his latest media availability. While some Ole Miss fans have taken issue with Longo’s offense this season, the Rebels do rank dead-last in red zone touchdowns among SEC teams in conference play, if the team’s offensive coordinator were to leave Oxford, there’s an outstanding chance the program takes a step back on that side of the ball next season.

According to the S&P+ Ratings, Ole Miss features the No. 12 most efficient offense (out of 130 teams) in the nation this season, while the defense rated No. 109 in the nation. Under Longo, quarterback Jordan Ta’amu went from a complete unknown junior college prospect to leading the SEC in passing yards in his only season as the entrenched starter. Running back Scottie Phillips also found massive success in Longo’s system after signing with the Rebels out of junior college during the previous offseason.

Clearly, the offense isn’t the issue in Oxford.

The only issue with having a wildly productive unit, coordinators are going to field calls from other programs. That’s indeed what Luke is dealing with at this time from Longo.

“When you have back-to-back top 10 offenses, the coordinators are going to get looks and he is getting looks,” Luke admitted. “I think that’s natural when you have really good offenses. You have coordinators interviewing for head jobs.”

Interestingly enough, Luke was then asked a followup regarding whether he wanted Longo back on his staff for 2019.

“We’re really good on offense. We had two top 10 offenses. Are there things we got to fix in the red zone? Absolutely,” Luke said. “And again, I know what good red zone offense looks like, and I’m going to fix that. I love Luke Logan, but I want him kicking extra points not field goals. We can get that fixed.

“There’s a lot of people that struggle getting to the red zone. We have a good offense, but we got to fix the red zone and we will.”

That’s an interesting response to a yes or no question, which only further muddles the water in Oxford. If Longo gets a good job offer in the coming days and weeks, will he be gone? Luke inherited Longo from former Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze and we’ll likely soon find out how well that relationship has evolved in over the previous two seasons.

One thing is for sure, if Ole Miss decides to move on from Longo, they better have a sure-thing lined up to replace him, otherwise, that decision could really blow up in their face.
