Football is all about trying to out-scheme your opponents to get any sort of edge when you take the field.

That job is made easier when you literally know what defensive schemes your opponent is going to run, as was the case for Wisconsin-La Crosse this season.

According to a report from the La Crosse Tribune, UW-L coaches were sent defensive schemes ahead of their game against Wisconsin-Whitewater this year:

An email containing eight PowerPoint presentations that detail the Warhawks’ defensive principles, coverage rules and alignments against a number of opponents’ formations was sent to UW-L coach Mike Schmidt on Aug. 22 and sent from Schmidt to UW-L offensive coaches on Sept. 17.

The email containing these PowerPoint files was sent to the Tribune as part of an open records request into the reassignment and eventual resignation of a former La Crosse offensive coordinator.

The report states that the emails were sent by a former Whitewater coach who wasn’t retained heading into the 2018 season.

Did the extra edge help? Nope. Whitewater still beat La Crosse 30-7. In fact, Whitewater didn’t lose a single game until the Division III semifinals, where they finished as runners up to Mary Hardin-Baylor.
