Win the recruiting battles, win the games. No, it’s not 100 percent corollary, but dominating signing days certainly is a more direct path to a double-digit victory total than, say, finishing outside of the Top 25 in the recruiting rankings.

The second signing day is Wednesday. Ninety-three of the Top 100 recruits signed early, in December. There are a few important, lingering battles that will be decided Wednesday.

Every player in the Top 100 has signed with, committed to or is considering a Power 5 program. The highest-ranked player that has signed with a Group of 5 program is 4-star QB Hank Bachmeier, ranked No. 235 overall. He signed with Boise State.

Given who has signed and including verbals, where are the Top 100 recruits in 247Sports’ composite rankings going?

Let’s take a look by conference.

ACC

Total: 8

5-stars: 1

4-stars: 7

QBs: 1

Skinny: Clemson has the ACC’s highest-rated class, but the reigning national champs didn’t clean up as much as you might think. Their class is ranked No. 9 overall — behind 4 SEC programs. The rankings, of course, are fluid. The Tigers are considered the favorite to land 5-star running back Jerrion Ealy, a former Ole Miss commit.

Big Ten

Total: 19

5-stars: 7

4-stars: 12

QBs: 1

Skinny: Michigan took advantage of Ohio State’s systemic dysfunction and coaching change and finally jumped the Buckeyes in the recruiting rankings. Now, the trick is to translate that paper success to the field. Michigan’s class is No. 7 entering Signing Day. Ohio State is at No. 13. This is the first time since 2010 that the Buckeyes are a) outside the top 10 nationally and b) not the highest-rated in the Big Ten.

Big 12

Total: 9

5-stars: 5

4-stars: 4

QBs: 1

Skinny: Oklahoma signed the No. 1-ranked QB in the country, Spencer Rattler, out of Arizona. Rattler’s reaction to Jalen Hurts’ decision to transfer to Oklahoma? “I love it,” Rattler told USA Today. Rattler praised Hurts and said he can’t wait to learn from him. Oklahoma’s QB factory got a lot richer this offseason.

Pac-12

Total: 12

5-stars: 1

4-stars: 11

QBs: 1

Skinny: The Pac-12 has only made the Playoff twice in the format’s 5-year history and didn’t exactly make up a lot of ground this cycle. Oregon landed the league’s only 5-star: DE Kayvon Thibodeaux, the No. 2-ranked player overall in the class. Arizona State signed the only QB in the Top 100 overall, Jayden Daniels, a dual-threat from California. Daniels already is enrolled.

SEC

Total: 43

5-stars: 18

4-stars: 25

QBs: 2

Skinny: The rich get richer. The SEC grabbed nearly half of the Top 100 recruits in the country and more than half of the 34 5-stars. Both totals could climb Wednesday, too, as the league is in the mix for all 7 remaining uncommitted prospects, including the 2 uncommitted 5-stars: OT Darnell Wright and RB Jerrion Ealy. Ealy, also a baseball star, decommitted from Ole Miss in early January and recently took an official visit to Alabama.

Dual-threat Bo Nix already has enrolled at Auburn, which extended the SEC’s streak of signing a 5-star QB to 6 consecutive years.

If you’re a fan of another Power 5 conference, the silver lining might be that the SEC spread the wealth in this class. Eight programs signed at least 1 5-star.
