Zach Mettenberger’s last NFL regular-season snap came in 2015, but the former LSU quarterback showed Saturday night that he can still sling it.

Mettenberger came off the bench for the Memphis Express in Saturday night’s game at the Orlando Apollos when coach Mike Singletary decided to bench starting QB Christian Hackenberg. Mettenberger was 9-of-12 passing for 120 yards and two touchdowns.

“You definitely have to be supportive of your guys. I’ve been in his shoes before and it’s not easy,” Mettenberger told the Alliance of American Football’s official site. “You have to be ready to roll. The reason why I got to play is unfortunate, but I’m definitely excited to be playing again.”

Singletary wouldn’t commit to starting Mettenberger next Saturday when Memphis hosts the San Diego Fleet, but acknowledged Mettenberger played well in what was ultimately a losing effort.

“I think it’d be kind of silly to make decisions right now,” Singletary said. “We have to go back and look at the film and evaluate, but I certainly thought Zach gave us a chance to win. I thought he played his heart out, but we’ll have to look at the film and go from there.”

Mettenberger played with the Tennessee Titans in 2014 and ’15. He was claimed by the San Diego Chargers and Pittsburgh Steelers in 2016, but did not see any regular-season game action. He has worked to return to the NFL, playing in The Spring League in 2018.
