Will Muschamp’s program has already gotten off to a terrific start building up South Carolina’s 2020 recruiting class but more elite prospects are needed if the Gamecocks are going to climb into the top 10 and possible reach top 5 status.

While some may think that talk is premature, the nation’s No. 1 overall prospect Jordan Burch resides in Columbia and the Gamecocks are among his leading contenders. South Carolina is currently trending for four-star running back Tank Bigsby and four-star defensive linemen Alex Huntley and Myles Murphy and the latest good news on the trail comes from the top prospect from the state of Tennessee, Reggie Grimes Jr.

The son of former Alabama defender Reggie Grimes, the younger Grimes will be in Columbia for his first official visit this weekend. The 6-foot-4, 240-pound Grimes ranks as the nation’s No. 31 overall prospect, the No. 3 weakside defensive end and Tennessee’s top recruit in the 2020 recruiting cycle according to 247Sports Composite Rankings. He was previously a five-star prospect but is now listed just outside that range as a high-end four-star recruit.

In addition to South Carolina, Grimes is being heavily recruited by Alabama and Tennessee in the SEC.

Grimes announced the news on Thursday:

The Gamecocks currently have the nation’s No. 12 recruiting class despite only holding pledges from eight prospects. The class is currently ranked No. 5 in the SEC.
