Jake Bentley’s season at South Carolina is officially over.

The senior Gamecocks quarterback learned that he’ll have to surgery, meaning he won’t play again in USC’s 2019 campaign.

Bentley was hurt on the last play of South Carolina’s Week 1 game against North Carolina, suffering what coach Will Muschamp described as a mid-foot sprain, also called a “Lisfranc.”

Bentley joined South Carolina in 2016 after re-classifying as a recruit. He chose to return to Columbia for his senior season. Bentley has not yet used the redshirt season he is allowed to use in his five-year NCAA eligibility window. Father Bobby Bentley is an assistant coach on Muschamp’s staff.

With Bentley out, South Carolina turned to true freshman Ryan Hilinski as the starter in Week 2. Hilinski turned in a stellar debut, leading the Gamecocks to a record offensive output in Week 2, and looks to be the starter moving forward for the rest of the 2019 season.

In three-plus seasons, Bentley has played in 34 games, throwing 1,002 passes and completing 626 for 7,527 yards, 55 touchdowns and 32 interceptions.
