The SEC’s Week 4 is in the books, and several teams escaped as winners.

Most notably, Georgia beat Notre Dame 23-17 in a heavyweight and physical battle. Sure, Georgia belongs in the top five, but Notre Dame probably earned some respect even in the loss. The Irish played Georgia tough, and even UGA fans acknowledged it after the game.

Most figure Alabama, Georgia, LSU and Auburn to be in the College Football Playoff picture at this point. Don’t forget about Florida either, as the Gators are sitting pretty at 3-0.

ESPN released their SP+ rankings Sunday afternoon, and it featured five SEC teams in the top 10. Below is how ESPN describes the SP+ rankings on its website for those who aren’t familiar.

What is SP+? In a single sentence, it’s a tempo- and opponent-adjusted measure of college football efficiency. I created the system at Football Outsiders in 2008, and as my experience with both college football and its stats has grown, I have made quite a few tweaks to the system.

SP+ is intended to be predictive and forward-facing. That is important to remember. It is not a résumé ranking that gives credit for big wins or particularly brave scheduling — no good predictive system is. It is simply a measure of the most sustainable and predictable aspects of football. If you’re lucky or unimpressive in a win, your rating will probably fall. If you’re strong and unlucky in a loss, it will probably rise.

Here’s where every SEC program ranks:

1. Alabama
4. Georgia
7. LSU
8. Florida
10. Auburn
14. Mississippi State
15. Missouri
18. Texas A&M
45. South Carolina
52. Kentucky
54. Ole Miss
63. Tennessee
82. Arkansas
108. Vanderbilt
