St. Louis high school Cardinal Ritter has suspended its 2019 football season. The school has forfeited its games and dismissed its entire coaching staff. Additionally, the AD has decided to retire.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that the coaching staff played an ineligible player in the first game of the season. Running back Bill Jackson was ejected from last year’s state championship game, and per National Federation of State High School Associations guidelines, he’d have to be suspended for the first game of the season. So, instead of sitting Jackson, the coaching staff played him, but in an attempt to hide him, they switched Jackson’s number from 4 to 24 and identified him as a different player on the roster. However, his tattoos gave him away. Jackson scored one touchdown and rushed for 109 yards in the season opening win.

Ritter started the season 7-0 and was ranked as the state’s No. 1 team.

The Missouri State High School Activities Association confirmed Friday afternoon that executive director Kerwin Urhahn accepted Ritter’s self-imposed sanctions.

Action against running back Jackson was not addressed. The school is completing an internal investigation.
