The Auburn Tigers entered Wednesday night’s game at Alabama as the No. 4 team in the country, sporting a perfect 15-0 record.

However, the Crimson Tide played their rivals really well, and ended up defending their home court to hand the Tigers their first loss of the season. The final score read Alabama 83, Auburn 64.

This was a signature win for first-year coach Nate Oats. His team has been on the verge of something like this for a while now, but the Tide finally put it all together on Wednesday night.

Kira Lewis Jr. looked like a star, finishing with a game-high 25 points. Herb Jones added 14 points and Alex Reese had 13.

The Tigers are always going to be susceptible to losses when threes aren’t falling for them, and that was certainly the case at Alabama. In the loss, the Tigers finished a disappointing 7-for-28 from beyond the arc.

Auburn’s backcourt duo of J’Von McCormick and Samir Doughty finished with only 11 combined points on 4-for-19 shooting. That was tough for the Tigers to overcome.

Alabama hadn’t beaten a top-5 team since Dec. 30, 2017, when the Tide won at home against Texas A&M. Can Oats’s squad continue to build on this momentum? They’ll host an up-and-down Mizzou squad on Saturday.
