Heading into the 2019 season, no one envisioned LSU would be going on a 15-0 march toward the national championship.

While talent may not have been an issue for the Tigers, Alabama and Georgia were seen by most as the clear frontrunners to win the SEC and contend for the College Football Playoff exiting SEC Media Days. Of course, that was before we all knew how big of an impact Joe Brady would have on LSU’s offense and the massive progression Joe Burrow would take in his second season in Baton Rouge.

Now with LSU suffering a large number of defections this offseason, either to the NFL or assistants leaving for other college jobs, the hype surrounding both Alabama and Georgia is heating up once again. However, as LSU just proved, oftentimes the consensus favorites don’t live up to the hype in college football and are overtaken by a team firing on all cylinders.

During a recent interview with The Spun, Greg McElroy was asked which team he could see making a run similar to the one LSU just went on. While he didn’t have to limit his response to the SEC, McElroy picked a league team that could fit the bill heading into next season:

Probably not a huge surprise here, but I think Florida has a chance to make some serious noise next year. They return a lot of quality pieces from last season and Dan Mullen is as good as you’ll find in CFB in maximizing the potential of his teams. If they can stay healthy and get a boost in production from the their QB Kyle Trask, they could be poised to make a playoff push.

Those that were paying attention saw Kyle Trask emerge as one of the SEC’s best quarterbacks last season and that was with him taking over the starting duties four games into the season. What will he look like with an entire offseason of work with the first-team unit in Dan Mullen’s offense?

If he takes a Joe Burrow-like jump, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Florida make its first trip to the College Football Playoff.
