One of Ole Miss’ transfers from Canada received positive news about his path to play, but one final hurdle remains.

Deane Leonard, of one Ole Miss’ two Canadian transfers, has been granted immediate eligibility by the NCAA, but the SEC still has to approve the move, coach Lane Kiffin told reporters on Monday. Leonard is a cornerback from the University of Calgary who tweeted in July that he committed to the Rebels. In Calgary, he recorded 42 tackles and made 4 interceptions. The Calgary native is 6-foot-2 and 195 pounds. His transfer was in part because of the cancellation of the USports season, he tweeted in July.

“Obviously I’m just blessed to have the chance to end my college career competing against the best players in college football,” Leonard said in July, to OM Spirit. “When they told us that we weren’t having football in Canada this year it was heartbreaking at first, but then I looked at it as an opportunity to go out and compete against the best. Ole Miss is going to help develop me into a better football player. Hopefully it will prepare me for a long career in the NFL or CFL.”
