Big Ten football is back on for the fall 2020 season, but Ohio State and company won’t be back in the Associated Press Top 25 just yet.

On Friday, Thomas Murphy of Arkansas Democrat-Gazette shared the following, “FYI: Associated Press poll voters have been informed by Ralph D. Russo at AP that pollsters should not include Big Ten teams on this Sunday’s ballots. Could change by the week after. No easy way to do this. Awaiting Big Ten schedule release.”

In August, the AP decided to include teams from conferences who were not planning to play in the fall.

“The preseason poll has always been a speculative ranking of teams based on last year’s results and knowledge about the new makeup of teams,” AP global sports editor Michael Giarrusso told Ralph D. Russo. “This year, we think it is crucial to give all the teams and all their fans a snapshot look at what the Top 25 would have been to open the season.”

In the preseason AP Top 25, six Big Ten teams were included:

  • Ohio State (No. 2)
  • Penn State (No. 7)
  • Wisconsin (No. 12)
  • Michigan (No. 16)
  • Minnesota (No. 19)
  • Iowa (No. 24)

It’s unclear where the Big Ten teams will land when they eventually rejoin the AP Top 25. Rankings are sure to be an adventure this year with the varying conference start dates.
