Vanderbilt has decided on a starting quarterback for its season opener against Texas A&M, and it’ll be a true freshman under center to begin the year for the Commodores.

Ken Seals will be starting for Vanderbilt, according to a report by Simon Gibbs of the The Vanderbilt Hustler, which was later confirmed by Robbie Weinstein of 247Sports.com. Seals, who is from Weatherford, Texas, was a 3-star recruit in the 2020 class per the 247Sports Composite rankings.

When the Commodores released their depth chart for the season opener earlier this week, they listed four quarterbacks. However, they didn’t rank any of them, instead separating each with an “or.” In addition to Seals, Vanderbilt has juniors Jeremy Moussa and Danny Clark and fellow true freshman Mike Wright.

According to Weinstein, Seals will be the third true freshman opening-week starting quarterback in the SEC since 1972, joining Tennessee’s Brent Schaeffer in 2004 and Auburn’s Bo Nix last year.

Earlier in camp, Vanderbilt offensive coordinator Todd Fitch praised what he had seen from Seals in the early weeks as practice got underway.

“I’ve been very impressed,” Fitch told Weinstein on Aug. 19. “He was well-coached in high school, comes from a very good, competitive state of high school football, as we know. He’s done a really good job.”

Vanderbilt is set to kick off at No. 10 Texas A&M on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET on SEC Network Alternate.
