Vanderbilt QB Ken Seals had a solid debut on Saturday at Texas A&M in his first game starting for the Commodores. Coach Derek Mason said he was not surprised with that performance because of what Seals did in high school.

Seals was 20-for-29 passing on Saturday in the 17-12 loss in College Station, as he threw for 150 yards a touchdown and two interceptions.

“In watching Ken play the game in high school, he threw from every platform that there was,” Mason said at his regular Tuesday press conference. “Whether it was pocket movement, playing from the pocket, a little zone read action. Obviously it was at the high school level, but what you saw on Saturday was what we saw of Ken coming out of high school. Extremely accurate, on the move as well as in the pocket, and those were the things that have shown up around camp.”

Mason said Seals still has room for improvement, but one of the prerequisites of playing in the SEC is the quarterback needs to put the ball in catchable positions.

“You got to make sure you give guys the opportunity to make plays on the ball,” Mason said. “He can do that. He can do it on the perimeter, he can do it from the pocket and I think as he continues to play, he’s only going to get better.”

The Commodores return to action against LSU this week in Nashville, in a game that will have limited fan attendance.
