College football insider says CFP expansion could lead to major change for conference championship games, schedules
Big changes are coming to the college football postseason with the Playoff field expanding from four teams to 12.
Conference championships have been widely discussed as the proposed expanded field would be made up of the top six conference champs and six at-large bids. One college football insider says the importance of conference titles could lead to a major change to the makeup of conference championship games.
In a Twitter thread, Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports noted that CFP expansion could mean the end of conference divisions.
There’s multiple scenarios to consider. Could a league’s top ranked team get upset by an 8-4 team and end up with the league getting shut out of CFP? Also, could an upset allow two teams in the league to get in. (Much like the Clemson-ND scenario from this division-less season.)

College football is sure to look different in the coming years, potentially by 2023. We’ll see if the changes include the end of conference divisions.
