Could more SEC expansion already be in the works?

A blockbuster report by the Houston Chronicle’s Brent Zwerneman said that the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners reached out to the SEC about potentially joining the league.

Zwerneman wrote that a source indicates an “announcement could come within a couple of weeks concerning the potential addition of UT and OU to the league.” The SEC would then become the first 16-team Super Conference in college football.

Following the report, SEC Commissioner — at SEC Media Days — Greg Sankey was asked about the potential, and he responded with, “I’m here to talk about the 2021 season, ” per 247Sports Brandon Marcello.

It’s likely that Sankey was hoping to get through media days without having to address this report.

This could all happen very quickly, and it’s not surprising following the Name, Image & Likeness in college athletics. The NCAA is set to take a backseat as the governing body in college football, and Super Conferences could be in the near future.
