After Week 3 of the college football season, most onlookers believe Georgia and Alabama are the best teams in the country at this point, although Ohio State might garner some consideration as well.

That would also cput the Bulldogs and Crimson Tide atop the SEC’s pecking order. But who’s the third best team in the conference?

Texas A&M would have been the trendy pick in the preseason. And after it beat Utah to open its season, some might have chosen Florida.

The Gators and Aggies, however, have looked vulnerable lately, leaving the door open for a number of teams to make a claim.

The question at hand was recently tackled by the analysts on SEC Football Final, and a number of teams were included in the discussion.

Takeo Spikes said his pick right now would be Arkansas, which is currently ranked No. 10 in the AP Top 25.

“The reason why I say that is … they are better controlling the time of possession,” Spikes said. “They lost time of possession and this is something I wanted to see them go through at some point this year. Can they be able to make enough plays? … These guys made key defensive stops without their key defensive back (Jalen) Catalon in the game. And their quarterback, KJ Jefferson, he made clutch throws and was able to mix up the run as well.”

Benjamin Watson approved of Spikes’ pick and then also offered another contender.

“I love that pick because Arkansas, honestly, I thought was the second-best team in the SEC West,” Watson said. “But as the season has gone on, I think it’s the Tennessee Volunteers. I’ll tell you why. The question I had about Tennessee was could their defense keep pace with their offense. … At Pittsburgh, they showed me something, 16 hurries against (Kedon) Slovis, they had 4 sacks last week, 4 sacks in this game. I think their defense is keeping pace with their offense, and that’s scary for people in the SEC.”

Chris Doering then chimed in and went in a completely different direction.

“I planted the Big Blue Nation flag early in the preseason and I said they were going to go 11-1,” said Doering of Kentucky. “The schedule is perfect for them. They’re getting better, they have a great leader that’s going to be a first round quarterback They have perhaps the best group of linebackers in the SEC.

“They’ve been able to get better on the offensive line, and you know what, on Oct. 1, they get their best player back. Are you kidding me? Things are setting up perfectly for them to not only be the third-best team in the league, I think they have a chance to be in the SEC Championship Game.”
