With Jeremy Johnson entering his fourth season, some have wondered how he’ll handle the ongoing competition for the starting quarterback job.

Billy Gresham, Johnson’s high school coach, thinks the regardless of the outcome, the quarterback will do anything to help the team, even play another position.

“He’s an Auburn guy. He’s going to graduate from Auburn. He’s been there four years. Whatever it takes to get Auburn back where it needs to be, he’s willing to do it,” Gresham told 247Sports’ Evan McCullers. “Every player wants to start. Every player wants to be good at what they do. But for him, he’s a great teammate first. … If he feels like he’s probably not that guy, if somebody else is best for the team, he’ll follow that leader.”

Al Pogue, Gresham’s predecessor and a former Auburn quality control analyst, isn’t counting Johnson out to potentially be the Week 1 starter again in 2016.

“Last year really showed him that you’ve got to be tough to deal with some adverse situations, especially being a high-profile quarterback,” Pogue said. “But I think, when it’s all said and done, the kid’s going to be ready to go. He’s not going to shy away. Whoever Auburn brings in to battle with him, he’s not going to shy away from him. They’re going to have to beat Jeremy Johnson.”

Auburn coach Gus Malzahn has indicated there is no rush for AU to name a starter, and that an announcement will come once the staff is “100 percent certain” on one of the quarterbacks.

Johnson began the 2015 campaign as the starting quarterback, but was benched in favor of Sean White after three games. He appeared in 11 games, going 95-of-157 passing for 1054 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions along with 47 rushes for 137 yards and six touchdowns on the ground. White and Johnson are competing with transfer QB John Franklin III for the starting job in 2016.
