Well, that was something. Three SEC squads finished weekend 1 with losing records and if you had Vandy, Mississippi State and Florida, play the lottery. Sure, quality of competition matters, and that’s why none of those upsets are earth-shattering … and why Kentucky or Bama going 3-0 doesn’t vault them up our power rankings. But a weekend in, here’s where the SEC baseball squads stack up. And as a note, all rankings are from the current Baseball America poll.

14. Missouri (3-1)

Beating Nicholls in 3 of 4 games wasn’t a bad start — particularly the Friday and Saturday beatings of 12-1 and 14-2 scores. But the last two games were a loss and a close win and the Tigers have to beat some better competition to rise up the rankings.

13. South Carolina (2-1)

They did win their series, but it took a 6-run 9th inning on Sunday to pull it off, and a series with UNC-Greensboro should not be this tough for the Gamecocks. The rally has to be USC’s hope moving forward because there was plenty in the first 26 innings of the series to not love.

12. Alabama (3-0)

Yes, Bama swept their series with Xavier, but a pair of 1-run wins didn’t show a ton of offensive power. The Tide really didn’t do anything to drop in the rankings, but with Auburn’s weekend, there had to be a shuffle and by virtue of a fairly pedestrian series win, Alabama drops.

11. Kentucky (3-0)

The Wildcats likewise swept their series with Jacksonville State but still have plenty of unanswered questions. The early March series with TCU will be a good chance to assess this Wildcat squad and whether they’ve made any progress up the SEC standings.

10. Auburn (2-1)

Kudos to the Tigers, who won 2 of 3 games in Texas, including a 2-1 pitchers’ duel against a then-ranked Texas Tech squad. Auburn’s pitching was a pleasant surprise and the offensive explosion on Sunday against Kansas State was impressive. Maybe we were all sleeping on the Tigers.

9. Texas A&M (3-0)

The Aggies swept their opening series, but the games on Saturday and Sunday were both hard-fought wins over a ho-hum Fordham team. Yes, A&M looks better. But the West will still be a juggernaut.

8. No. 15 Georgia (3-0)

Yes, the Bulldogs swept Albany to open the season. That said, 4-2 and 7-6 wins on Friday and Saturday didn’t show much. Georgia’s upside is definitely higher than this ranking. They could easily have been, say, 6th. But we need to see more to make that jump.

7. No. 19 Florida (1-2)

On the other hand, the Gators last Saturday and Sunday to a Liberty squad that rode the series win to a No. 18 ranking this week. The sky isn’t exactly falling in Gainesville, but after a No. 1 ranking last season that slid into mediocrity in a hurry, a good start would have been significant. Instead, Florida struggled through a tough opening weekend.

6. No. 17 Tennessee (3-0)

Tennessee swept Georgia Southern in a series that didn’t tell us a ton. It did tell us that the Vols were ready from the start, winning all 3 games easily and doing nothing to hurt the perception that they might be a team to watch in the East.

5. No. 11 LSU (3-0)

Likewise for LSU, which dominated Maine from the get-go, setting a program record with 51 runs in the 3 victories. The Tigers are very much looking like a team that could figure in the SEC West race and make a run deep in the College World Series.

4. No. 8 Mississippi State (1-2)

Getting bested by now-No. 6 Long Beach State wasn’t exactly shameful. But it was a bad sign that State’s bats were in the deep freeze until sometime early on Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs will be fine, and if this stumble should tell us much, it’s that State will have a challenging season playing with the national champion bullseye squarely on their back.

3. No. 7 Vanderbilt (1-2)

Like MSU, the Vandy Boys should not hang their heads after dropping a series to now-No. 3 Oklahoma State. The common issue, though, was hitting — or a lack of it. Vandy has enough arms to cobble together a top of the SEC staff. But they’ve got to take care of business at the plate or teams like Tennessee and Georgia will cause them trouble.

2. No. 9 Arkansas (2-1)

See above and repeat. Arkansas managed to win their opening series with Illinois State but was far from dominant in doing so. Frankly, you could switch Arkansas and LSU in these rankings without any real argument. The Razorbacks’ Texas visit this coming weekend should be interesting, especially Saturday’s game with Stanford.

1. No. 10 Ole Miss (3-0)

Aside from 4 errors in the opener, Ole Miss displayed a ton of weapons in all areas of the game in sweeping Charleston Southern. Yes, we don’t know how they’ll compete against a top team. But the Rebels have a leg up on much of the league right now in that they avoided an early stumble and looked genuinely impressive in doing so.
