Dabo Swinney has never coached in the NFL. But could that change before his coaching career is over?

One former NFL GM thinks that it should.

On Tuesday, former Cleveland Browns GM Michael Lombardi said on 106.7 The Fan in Washington, D.C., that he thinks Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder should try to hire Swinney, who has been the head coach at Clemson since 2009.

“If I were Dan Snyder, I would get on an airplane and fly to Clemson, South Carolina, and tell Dabo Swinney, ‘Look my man, you need to come in here, you’ve got to fix my team,'” Lombardi said on the radio show, according to 106.7 The Fan’s Chris Russell.

Swinney has had tremendous success leading the Tigers, as he is 119-30 at the helm. Since the start of the 2011 season, he owns a 100-15 record.

The Redskins have not been successful during that time, as they’ve only won 10 games in a season once since the start of 2007. They’ve also gone 0-3 in the playoffs during that stretch.

It would be exciting to see Swinney move to the NFL to see if he could have the same type of success in the pro game. But that move hasn’t always worked in the past, as Alabama coach Nick Saban struggled in his two seasons leading the Miami Dolphins.

While this may never happen, rumors such as these will likely continue to circulate for as long as Swinney is leading Clemson and keeping it as one of the top programs in the country.
