Dumb stuff to do, but really pretty insignificant. He'll end up paying a fine of $1500-$2000 and likely spend the weekend in jail. That's a combination of penalties for the speeding and driving on a suspended license, based on the fee structure on the ACCGOV website. Some people in the comments acting like he killed someone. It's not like he did the kind of thing Adam Anderson is accused of doing.
@KirbySmart: His credentials are better than you apparently think. When he had Fitzpatrick and Winston as his quarterbacks, that team was still the #1 passing offense in the NFL in 2018 with 320 yards per game. Imagine what he could have done with a good quarterback. It was ranked #4 in the NFL in 2017 with Monken as OC. In college, he was the OC for Oklahoma State in 2011 and 2012. In 2011, Oklahoma State was the #2 passing offense in the FBS. In 2012, it was the #8 passing offense in the FBS. In his last year as the head coach at Southern Miss (2015), that team was the #10 passing offense in the FBS.
I just looked at the listing of week 4 games. I can't imagine what other game that dude might have thought would be the 8:00 PM on CBS. It is, by far, the most nationally compelling game scheduled for week 4.
That's still probably sooner than Tennessee will have anything to look forward to....
After seeing the photo of the incriminating evidence, I have to say the office must have incredibly good eyes. Granted, I am far from an expert on marijuana, but if I saw that sitting on a car seat, the last thing I would assume it to be is pot. I honestly probably wouldn't even have noticed it....
It is always up to the discretion of the officer to arrest in a case like this. Athens-Clarke County is one of the few places in Georgia that makes it the norm to arrest, and the police chief up there has inaccurately stated in the past to the AJC that state law requires him to arrest in cases that a driver cannot present a valid license, but there is no such law. Typically, when other identification can be presented (student IDs, military ID, etc.), the officer will issue a citation for not having the driver's license. If the driver presents the valid license at the court hearing, typically the citation is dismissed. Luckily for me, Cobb Count police officers are bit more reasonable. I had a similar situation at a DUI checkpoint where I had left my driver's license in my gym bag at home. The only annoying part was having to attend the court hearing instead of being able to go to the court and show proof when it was more convenient for me. However, when it was my time for the hearing, the judge asked to see my license, looked at it for a few seconds, and told me I was free to go. I was in front of the judge for maybe two minutes.
Yikes. You know, back in the 1990's they passed a law in Georgia that would make this incident a felony if it had happened in that state. That law states that it is a felony to assault a sports official on the way to, during, or on the way from a sporting event. Apparently, there had been some incidents of aggression towards officials that had led to that law being passed.
