Sophomore point guard Quade Green sent waves around college basketball when he announced his decision to transfer midseason from Kentucky this week. Just last season, Green made his debut for Kentucky after signing with the program as a five-star recruit.

Green had started 13 games as a freshman but after Kentucky signed two five-star freshman guards, Green’s playing time had been significantly cut.

Here is the statement Green issued following his decision to transfer:

“I have loved my time at Kentucky and love Coach [John Calipari] and the staff. This was a difficult decision and one I didn’t take lightly. However, after talking with my family and the coaching staff, I just felt like it was best that I explore other opportunities for my athletic and academic future. I have enjoyed my time at Kentucky and I’ll never forget the Big Blue Nation for its love and its support.”

With the Wildcats already struggling on the season and now down to an eight-man rotation, it would be understandable if fans are hitting the panic button. However, ESPN college basketball analyst Seth Greenberg cautions fans from overreacting.

According to Greenberg, Kentucky will be better off with Green leaving.

“I think [Green] has a great relationship with Cal. He’s leaving because he’s not playing,” Greenberg said during a recent ESPN halftime segment. “Those guys are better than him. Sometimes you leave to get into a better situation. I know Quade, really well. He’s actually an assistant coach at Cal’s fantasy camp, the kid is a great kid. They want the best for him. He just needs a fresh start.

“Right now, he brings value to that team, he’s their best three-point shooter… Yet, this will be addition by subtraction because now it shortens Cal’s bench. You can’t keep three point guards happy, it just can’t happen. Now, all of a sudden, you have an eight-man rotation.

“I think this is a win-win. His relationship with Cal is good.”
